Having to change protection more than every hour

Women with heavy periods will usually increase the absorbency of the sanitary protection being used. If that has happened, and it is still necessary to change your pad or tampon more than every hour (particularly if this is required for multiple days during a menstrual period) this is a sign of excessive blood loss. Other signs include “doubling up” protection methods (wearing two pads at the same time, wearing a tampon and a pad together and soaking through both), or not leaving the house during a period for fear of flooding and accidents. Over time, this kind of heavy bleeding can lead to iron deficiency anemia.
